The benefits of careers guidance

Good careers education and guidance enables pupils at UAH to gain the basic knowledge and skills they need to begin navigating their way successfully through the career choices open to them.

It helps them to understand that a career is a person's pathway through learning and work. Starting that journey in year 7, students are well prepared to make subject choices during the year 8 options process and again at age 16. They are able to make informed choices that reflect their interests and strengths, while making sure they don't close any doors to possible future pathways. They receive help and advice through a wide range of activities such as formal careers lessons, one-to-one guidance interviews, work experience, contact with employers and visits to careers fairs.

It is crucial for our students to have high-quality, impartial information and guidance to get the most out of their learning and to enable successful progression from one stage to another.  Our pupils will be able to make informed decisions about their future learning, jobs and training and this will enable them to fulfil their potential.

Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a real job with training, which allows you to earn while they learn, and to gain a nationally recognised qualification.

Apprenticeships take between 1 and 5 years to complete, and cover 1,500 job roles in a wide range of industries, from engineering to accountancy, public relations to veterinary nursing.

Apprenticeships are now available up to degree level and beyond.

How we measure success

A successful careers guidance programme is reflected in higher numbers of pupils progressing to positive destinations such as apprenticeships, sixth form colleges, universities or employment.

Our destination data provides clear and comparable information on the success of our school in helping all of our pupils take qualifications that offer them the best opportunity to continue in education or training.
