Life After Sixth Form - Choosing your career

All of our Vocational and Trade qualification at University Academy Holbeach Sixth Form directly link to industry, so it may be an easy decision for you when choosing your future career. However for others it is much more difficult, and in any case looking for your first full time job can be pretty daunting …

We are very proud of the fact that 97% of our students leave our 6th Form with either a place in Further / Higher Education, an apprenticeship or a full time job and the careers service we offer to students is very important to us.

Part of the tutorial program within the 6th Form focuses on careers and you will cover all of the following essentials over the course of two years:

  • Searching and finding your perfect job
  • C.V Writing
  • Job Applications
  • The Interview Process

Sixth formers also take part in a Careers Day where you will work with Local and National employers and a professional careers company to hone your skills and techniques.

The tutors at University Academy Holbeach have a wealth of knowledge about careers that you will be able to access and you will also have the opportunity to get support from a professional careers advisor on a 1:1 basis. It always helps to have someone impartial as a sounding board to check if you're doing the right thing, so make sure you are using their expertise!

Options After Sixth Form

University / Further Education

If you are studying A Levels or Level 3 Courses they you may well decide to continue with your education at either University or a Further Education College. For further information click here.

Full time Employment

The work that students complete with us at UAH sixth form will prepare you for full time employment. However it is sometimes difficult to find that all elusive job …

The good news is that there are loads of different ways to search for work.

Search for jobs online

You’ll be spoiled for choice if you start your job search on the internet. You can use internet recruitment sites to search for jobs in your local area or by job title. Every day brings something new, so keep on your toes and check sites daily! If you’re desperate to work somewhere in particular, check out the company website. It could be the place to snap up your dream job.

Tap into the hidden jobs market

Did you know that around 60% of jobs are never advertised? How do you find out about ‘hidden jobs’? Networking is the answer! Talk to people you know. The more people who know you are looking for work the better. Even if they don’t know about a job themselves, they may know somebody who does. Have a chat with family, friends, teachers, Facebook friends and anybody else who knows you

Using social media to find work

Always tweeting, posting and updating your status? The good news is that you can use social media to boost your job search too. You could:

  • Create a professional profile on LinkedIn
  • Ask people you’ve worked with at school, work or work experience to recommend you or endorse your skills
  • Follow companies you’d like to work for on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, and watch out for job vacancies
  • Search Twitter for groups of professional interest and follow people who work in businesses you’re interested in
  • Set up a feed for job-seeking hashtags like #jobsearch.

Around 37% of employers use social media to screen potential job candidates. Remember to be professional online. Make sure there isn’t anything on a social media site that you wouldn’t want a future employer to see!

Other places to search

Get a feel for what’s going on in your local area. Check your local paper or local Jobcentre to see what’s on offer. If you know what you want to do, look at trade or professional magazines for job vacancies.

Approach employers

If you know where you want to work, why not approach the employer? Call in, email, write or send your CV and tell them why you’re interested in working for them. Even if there are no jobs on offer, an employer may remember you or keep your CV on file.

If you are looking for a job but would like to continue with your training then have you thought about the options below?

Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a real job with training, which allows your daughter or son to earn while they learn, and to gain a nationally recognised qualification. Apprenticeships take between 1 and 5 years to complete, and cover 1,500 job roles in a wide range of industries, from engineering to accountancy, public relations to veterinary nursing. Apprenticeships are now available up to degree level and beyond.

UAH Apprenticeships

We also have our own Apprenticeship Department at University Academy Holbeach that are based in the 6th Form Study Centre. They can offer you a wealth of advice and guide you through the application process, as well as supporting you to find a suitable employer.

Traineeships

A traineeship is an education and training programme with work experience that unlocks the great potential of young people and prepares them for their future careers by helping them to become ‘work ready’.

Traineeships are designed to help young people aged 16 to 24 who want to get an apprenticeship or a job but don't yet have appropriate skills or experience. See www.traineeships.apprenticeships.org.uk/traineeships.aspx
