Art and Design - KS4

Years 10 and 11

At the start of the course in Year 10 the students will complete an introductory project based around food and drink. This project is designed to give the students an introduction to as many Art and Design related materials, techniques and processes to enable them to be more informed artists. They will also be introduced to GCSE annotation, relevant research and how to write analytical artist studies to enable them to achieve higher grades at GCSE. The second project is their coursework which is worth 60% of the overall grade and they will be required to document that they can engage in the process of art and design in order to develop as effective and independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds. They need to use imaginative and intuitive powers when exploring and creating images and artefacts that are original and of value. They need to begin to be confident in taking risks and learn from their mistakes when exploring and experimenting with ideas, materials, tools and techniques. They need to show how they can independently, refine and develop ideas and personal outcomes. They need to Learn how to actively engage with the experience of working with a range of media, materials and techniques, including, traditional media. They need to use cultural knowledge, understanding and application of art in historical and contemporary contexts, societies and cultures. They need to document how they can critically understand through investigative, analytical, experimental, interpretive practical, technical and expressive skills to develop as effective and independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds. The final stage of the project is the controlled assessment which is set by the examination board AQA. In this final stage which ends with a 10 hour examination they need to document all of the above attributed whilst applying personal attributes including self-confidence, resilience, perseverance, self-discipline and commitment.
