Art and Design - KS3

Year 7

Students are to learn the fundamentals of how mark making will make their drawing visually more exciting. They will learn      how to create a range of tone to make their work look three dimensional and how colour and pattern can make their work visually more exciting. Throughout this year they will learn how to use and combine the elements of Art: line, tone, shape, form, colour, texture and pattern to enable them to make artwork look more realistic and visual. This year the students are to focus on 2-3 materials per term to allow more time to learn a range of techniques and processes with each material. Each activity within this project will enable each child to discover which materials they prefer to use whilst the teacher uses each task as a diagnostic tool to determine the pupils level over each term. This will be determined by observing how the pupil’s complete projects based around skulls, mythical creatures and a Pop Art inspired Sweet project. Successful final pieces will show a connection to the wide range of artists and designers studied and the skills, techniques and process learnt during each project.

The Year 7 Curriculum Overview is available below.

Year 8

Students learnt the fundamentals of mark making, tone, form, application of pattern and colour in Year 7! In Year 8 they are to revisit and develop their pre-existing skills, knowledge and understanding to make their work visually exciting whilst showing clearer links with the artists studied. This year the students are to focus on a new material and the opportunity to revisit the materials taught in year 7 to embed the learning. This will allow more time to learn a range of techniques and processes with each material. Each activity within this project is to act as a self-assessment process for each child to discover which materials they prefer to use whilst the teacher uses each task as a diagnostic tool to determine the level of each pupil over the term. This will be determined by observing how the pupil’s complete projects based around Mini Beasts, Still Life and Cultural Patterns. Each exercise over this term is to ensure that the students are evaluating and refining their approach to constantly improve. Over this year the importance of researching artists, designers and craftspeople will be embedded and the students will be taught how this can be utilised to make their work more individual and imaginative.

The Year 8 Curriculum Overview is available below.

 Year 9

Students learnt the fundamentals of formal elements of Art in Year 7. In Year 8 they revisited and developed their pre-existing skills to understand how to make their drawings more visually exciting. In Year 9 they are to refine the skills and techniques learnt in Year 7 & 8, they will be introduced to the Principles of Design and they will develop their knowledge and understanding of traditional Art materials to hone their ability. It is envisaged that the creativity of Year 7 and 8 will blend seamlessly with Year 9 to make them innovative with their selection of materials, techniques and processes which in turn will put them in a better position to raise their attainment if they select to study Art for GCSE. Each exercise over this term is to ensure that the students are analytically evaluating and refining their approach to traditional Art materials to constantly improve. The students will be assessed over two projects in Year 9 rather than 3 in Years 7 and 8 to get them familiar with completing more sustained work for a longer period. The two projects for this year are Natural World and Identity. Over this year the importance of researching artists, designers and craftspeople will be introduced and the students will be taught how they can be utilised to make their work more individual, creative and imaginative.
