Who is this course for?
This course is for any prospective student that is looking to explore the UK Society structure with consideration to how institutions effect individual societal development in further education in a Post16 setting
What will you learn?
The central focus of study in this specification should be on UK society today, with consideration given to different institutions and the effect they have on individual and societal development. This course develops skills in critical thinking and consider how to respond to a range of debates writing at length to form coherent argument.
This course focus on contemporary society and foster the development of critical and reflective thinking with a respect for social diversity. It must provide an awareness of the importance of social structure and social action in explaining social issues. Students must be encouraged to develop their own sociological awareness through active engagement with the contemporary social world. These specifications have been designed with the clear objective of addressing the requirements above and will encourage students to:
- Acquire knowledge and a critical understanding of contemporary social processes and social changes
- Appreciate the significance of theoretical and conceptual issues in sociological debate
- Understand and evaluate sociological methodology and a range of research methods through active involvement in the research process
- Develop skills that enable individuals to focus on their personal identity, roles and responsibilities within society
- Develop a lifelong interest in social issues.

How long is this course?
All of our A-Level courses are two-year courses.
How will I be assessed for this course?
For this subject, students will be assessed through examinations which will take place at the end of the second year of study. In addition to formal examinations, throughout the academic year, students will also undertake mock exams, which will also help to assess subject knowledge and prepare for formal examinations.
Students will learn in a supportive classroom environment for their studies. Students will also be able to undertake independent study as part of this course as lead by their class teacher.
What are the entry requirements for this course?
It is desired that students have gained, or are working towards, a GCSE qualification in this subject at grade 6 or above. Additionally students should have 5 GCSE's grades 5-9 including Maths and English and minimum of grade 6 or above in their other chosen A-Level subjects.
What can I go on to do after this course?
From successful completion of this course, students can go on to study in Higher Education for any degree in the public sector such as:
