Art Trip
On Monday 1st April year 9 students spent a day visiting St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Tate Modern art gallery accompanied by members of the art department and teaching assistants. Arriving at the cathedral for 11.30am students spent time visiting the crypt which contains the tombs of Admiral Horatio Nelson and The Duke of Wellington. Students were also able to see a range of classical sculptures and paintings in the crypt. The highlight of our visit was a climb to the famous Whispering Gallery inside the cathedral dome before making a steep ascent to the very top which afforded a stunning panorama of central London which was enhanced by the glorious weather and clear blue sky. Before leaving St. Paul’s students had an opportunity to see the Harry Potter staircase made famous in The Prisoner of Azkaban. Following a picnic on the cathedral green we made our way across the Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern which is the most visited museum in the UK. As part of their project on Modern Art students were able to marvel at famous works of art by the likes of Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein and Georges Braque. Students were also able to take photographs of art works and buy postcards from the gallery shop which they will place in their sketch books as a record of their experience. We left London at 3.30pm to arrive back in Holbeach at 7pm to end a day trip that students will remember for the rest of their lives!
